"The Somali Community of Tiger Bay Spoke Out!"

National Theatre Wales produced a poster which was advertising a play called “Soul Exchange” which was supposedly showing the rich and diverse cultures that exist in Tiger Bay, however, offensive and inappropriate images to the Somali Community of Cardiff Bay (Tiger Bay) were used. The community made numerous telephone calls to the director (Mr. John McGrath (Artistic Director) of National Theatre Walesexpressing their strong objection to the images on the poster and the play itself which had a sinister motive.

The community requested a meeting with director to find answers and explanation for the inappropriate use of such demeaning images. Mr. McGrath promised to remove the images immediately. The director agreed to have a meeting with some members of the community; however, on 17th of January 2011, a large number of people from the Somali community of Cardiff attended the meeting.

Mr. McGrath expressed his delight of having the opportunity to meet directly the members of the community and showed commitment to work talented young people from the community in the near future.

Mr. McGrath also made a public apology in the meeting for the inappropriate use of images and promised to write an official letter of apology as shown below. Back to the Top
